Meet George, Head Custodian

Meet George: The Heart of Whitehall-Yearling High School

In 2009, George Burton needed a job. Whitehall City Schools took a chance on him, and in return, George promised they would never regret their decision. Fifteen years later, George is still keeping his promise. As Head Custodian at Whitehall-Yearling High School, George manages a team of six custodians who work together to ensure the school building runs smoothly. His day begins early at 5:45 AM, as he opens the building, turns on the lights, and ensures that every corner of the school is ready for the day ahead.

George's responsibilities are extensive. From managing trash disposal and sweeping floors to addressing mechanical issues and organizing maintenance work orders, George is involved in every aspect of keeping the school in top shape. His dedication extends to the athletic facilities as well, where he ensures that stadiums are prepped and ready for Whitehall's student-athletes to shine.

One of the busiest times of the day for George is lunchtime. He stays in the cafeteria during each lunch period, guaranteeing that the area remains clean and welcoming for every student. George and his team also coordinate setups and teardowns for various school events. This behind-the-scenes work is vital for the seamless execution of school functions and activities.

When asked why he chooses to work at Whitehall, George's answer is simple: "It's the great administration. I have a feeling of home here." This loyalty to Whitehall underscores his commitment and love for the school community.

The most rewarding part of George’s job? The interactions with staff and students. George believes in the impact of his work, saying, "I know what I'm doing makes a difference. I know that I'm appreciated." His passion for his role is evident in the clean, safe, and organized environment he maintains.

George's story highlights the critical role custodial staff play in the life of a school. They are not just maintaining buildings; they are creating a welcoming and functional space where learning can thrive. For those considering a similar path, working as a custodian in a school district like Whitehall offers a chance to make a meaningful impact and be part of a supportive and grateful community.

Join George and others who dedicate their skills to ensuring our schools are more than just educational facilities; they're homes away from home. Consider a career with Whitehall City Schools and experience the fulfillment of knowing you are a key part of something bigger, contributing to the daily success and well-being of students and staff alike.
