Counseling Information

Informed Consent
 
The following outlines the rights of both the parents and the students:​

To the student:
  1. I will treat you with respect as a unique individual. I will respect your individual values, and not impose my own values on you. I will work with you to develop personal goals and a plan to achieve your goals.
  2. I will keep what we talk about in counseling confidential. This means I will not share what you tell me with other people unless I have your permission.
  3. There are some serious situations where I need assistance in order to help a student, and I will need to break the confidentiality agreement. In the following situations, I am required to tell:
    • If I discover from you or someone else that someone is hurting you. I
    • If I discover from you or someone else that you plan to harm someone else.
    • If I discover from you or someone else that you plan to harm yourself.
    • If a judge tells me I have to in a court of law.
  1. If you are in a small group with other students, I will strongly encourage all group members to keep confidentiality, but I cannot guarantee it.
  2. Sometimes I need help from other counselors and educators to determine the best way to help a student. This is called consulting. If I need to do this in order to help you, I will not use your name and will keep your identity private.

 
To the Guardian of student under 18:
  1. I will treat your child with respect as a unique individual. I will respect your child’s individual values, and not impose my own values on him or her. I will work with you and your child to develop personal goals and a plan to achieve you and your child’s goals.
  2. I will keep what your child and I talk about in counseling confidential. This means I will not share what your child tells me with you or other people unless I have your child’s permission.
  3. There are some serious situations where I need assistance in order to help a student, and I will need to break the confidentiality agreement. In the following situations, I am required to tell:
    • If I discover from your child or someone else that someone is hurting your child.
    • If I discover from you or someone else that he or she plans to harm someone else.
    • If I discover from you or someone else that your child plans to harm him or herself.
    • If a judge tells me I have to in a court of law.
