Senate Bill 288: Erin’s Law

Ohio's Senate Bill 288, known as Erin’s Law, updates health education requirements to include instruction on child sexual abuse prevention, dating violence prevention, and sexual violence prevention. The legislation also requires notification for parents and guardians and training for school personnel.


Instruction for Grades K-6

Schools are now required to provide age-appropriate instruction on child sexual abuse prevention for students in grades K-6.

  • This instruction will take place annually.
  • Students will receive information about available counseling and resources for children who have experienced sexual abuse.

Instruction for Grades 7-12

Students in grades 7-12 will receive age-appropriate instruction on dating violence prevention and sexual violence prevention.

  • This content will be taught in Health class and includes topics such as:
    • Recognizing dating violence warning signs
    • Understanding the characteristics of healthy relationships

Parental Review and Opt-Out Options

Curriculum Review

Under Ohio Revised Code 3313.60, parents and guardians have the right to review curriculum materials related to child sexual abuse prevention and sexual violence prevention.

  • To review these materials, submit a written request to your child’s principal.
  • The principal will provide access to the materials at the school within 48 hours of receiving the request.

Opt-Out Option

Parents and guardians may choose to exempt their child from this instruction.

  • Opt-out forms will be provided by your child’s principal.
  • If your child is opted out, teachers may assign alternative health lessons or activities unrelated to these topics.
  • Opting out will not result in any disciplinary action, academic penalty, or other sanctions for your child.
