Screenings

Under Ohio Revised Code section 3313.69, all students in grades K, 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, and 11, as well as students new to the district, will receive vision and hearing screenings this school year. These routine health checks will take place at your child's school this fall. 

Why are these screenings important?

• Vision & Hearing Health: Good vision and hearing are essential for your child's speech development, reading skills, and overall learning capacity.
• Early Detection: Problems often develop gradually, and children often do not realize they are experiencing a change in vision or hearing.

What tests are included?

• Vision Screening: Visual acuity (distance vision), binocular vision (how the eyes work together), and color vision (for specified grades).
• Hearing Screening: Audiometry testing to measure hearing acuity at different pitches.

Understanding the Results:

• If your child passes: You may not receive a formal report from the school, but the documentation will remain on file in the school health clinic.
• If your child does not pass: You will receive a written notification and referral form in a sealed envelope. This form will outline the next steps and should be taken to an eye care specialist (optometrist or ophthalmologist) or hearing specialist (audiologist or ENT) for a comprehensive examination.

Please note: School screenings are simple checkups designed to catch common issues and are not a substitute for a comprehensive eye exam or full medical evaluation.

Opt-Out Information:
If you wish to exempt your child from the school vision or hearing screenings, Ohio law allows you to opt out by submitting a signed, written request to the school nurse or building administrator before the screenings begin on September 15th.
