New mural shows talent; school spirit

New mural shows talent; school spirit

In the process of renovating the Walter Armes Learning Center, much work went into the auxiliary gymnasium at WYHS. Part of that was fresh paint on the walls which left them looking new but also very bare. That was about to change.

WCS Superintendent, Brian Hamler, approached WYHS Art Teacher, Kelly Solack, about the idea of her art students creating a new mural design and painting it on the wall. Ms. Solack was very excited about this opportunity to have her students show off their talent and their school spirit!

In conjunction with fellow WYHS Art Teacher, Mindy Staley, the two teachers asked the students to submit designs. WYHS student, Ruth Regassa, created a winning composition that was selected by Mr. Hamler.

WYHS Principal, Paul Smathers, helped the group put a plan together for the summer mural timeline. The students and teachers worked Monday through Friday mornings during the month of June to plan, draw, and paint the mural. Although there was a core group of students working on the project, other students stopped by and participated when they could. A little was done by many hands.

It is Ms. Solack’s hope that everyone will see and feel the strength and positive spirit of our school in the mural.
